The intracoastal waterway is used by barges transporting heavy freight as well as by pleasure craft. Most Florida ports are primarily engaged in domesticÊtrade. In tonnage, phosphate is Florida's major export and coal and petroleum are its major imports. Phosphates are primarily shipped from Tampa, and to a much smaller degree, Jacksonville. Most phosphate is shipped elsewhere in the United States, but some is exported. Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades) receives large amounts of petroleum, whereas northwest Florida ports of Panama City and Port St. Joe receive large amounts of coal.
